Lot #59. Léoville-Poyferre 1966

Description: Consists of 1 Bottle, 0.75L
Score: 92 JG.
"This was the first time that I can recall tasting the 1966 Poyferré, and . . . this wine was simply lovely. What a crime what has happened at this property, which once upon a time was one of the most terroir-specific wines in the entire Médoc, and is now one of the more boringly modern and lug-headed wines to be found in St. Julien. In any case, 1966 was still the glory years at Poyferré, and the wine delivers a superb, refined bouquet of black cherries, nutskins, tobacco, summer truffles and that inimitable, great base of Poyferré soil. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, long and deep, with just a touch less refinement than either Beychevelle or Ducru, but simply amazing length and grip on the complex and soil-driven finish. The acids are a bit lower on the 1966 Leoville Poyferré than on many other of the classed growths in this vintage . . ." John Gilman, View From the Cellar, May/Jun 2008, Issue #15
