93 JG. "The 1997 Roumier Bonnes-Mares is quite youthful and backwards today, but nonetheless, quite promising. The nose offers up pure notes of black cherry fruit, venison, bitter chocolate, herb tones and impressive minerality. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, complex and at the moment quite peppery, with a solid core of fruit and the minerality of the nose carrying through on the long and ripely tannic finish. There is just a touch of youthful tomato that picks up about mid-palate and follows through on the finish, but I suspect that this will dissipate with further bottle age. This is a fine, impressively reticent 1997 that will require a fair bit of cellaring to fully reach its apogee." John Gilman, View From the Cellar, Bonus Articles, Jun 2003 |
