93 JG. "The change of trellising for the Charmes, along with the adoption of green harvesting in the Dujac vineyards, several years ago have both coupled to reign in the productive vigor of the wines in this vineyard, and the result is that the Charmes-Chambertin is no longer lagging behind some of the other Dujac grand crus. The first vintage where I really noticed the quality of the Charmes jump up a notch was in 1998, and the wine has not missed a beat since. The 2004 is excellent, offering up a lovely bouquet of black cherries, bitter chocolate, herbs, incipient notes of meat, woodsmoke and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and transparent, with striking soil tones, excellent acids, ripe tannins, and great length and grip on the finish."
