"Schneider's 10% alcohol 2014 Riesling Kabinett in the liter bottle has a clear nose that leads to a light and sweet, piquant and grippy palate, which gives good refreshment--even after a bunch of Ausleses. This is very good Riesling for parties and hangover breakfasts. Jakob Schneider is one of the best lesser-known wine estates in Germany. Located in Niederhausen (Nahe), the family estate cultivates 25 hectares of vines including top vineyard sites such as Hermannshöhle, Klamm, Felsensteyer and Rosenheck in Niederhausen and the Norheimer Dellchen. Eighty-five percent of the total acreage is planted with Riesling, 12% with the three main Pinot varieties. Schneider is very proud to mention that his vines are cultivated on 52 different soil types, mainly volcanic soils and slate. His 2014s are of excellent quality and there are several great Rieslings among them, especially from the Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle--a vineyard that has become famous thanks to Helmut Dönnhoff. Although the wines are stunningly cheap, they have a great potential to age. Riesling lovers, keep an eye on this all too humble producer." Wine Advocate #223, Mar 2016 |
