96 JG. "The 1966 Vieux Château Certan is clearly one of the greatest vintages of this great estate that I have ever had the pleasure to taste, and it deserves to be ranked up there in the same celestial company as the great wines from the immediate post-war vintage. The hauntingly profound nose offers up a magical mélange of black truffles, blood orange, dark berries, cigar ash, gravelly and iron-infused soil tones, a bit of nutskin and smoky topnotes. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and brilliantly complex, with outstanding mid-palate depth, impeccable balance, great focus, tangy acids and stunning length and grip on the seamless, refined and very intensely flavored and long finish. Just a brilliant bottle of wine, the 1966 Vieux Château Certan will continue to cruise along at its absolute apogee for at least another fifteen or twenty years. One of the great sleepers out there in old school Pomerol from the decade of the 1960s." John Gilman, View From the Cellar, Jul/Aug 2009, Issue #22 |
