94 WA. "Always the richest and most powerful of the single-vineyard releases, the 2013 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard is the only single-vineyard Syrah to see any new oak, yet the oak is always completely soaked up by the wealth of fruit. The 2013s inky purple color is followed by a decadent array of plums, blueberries, smoked herbs and violets characteristics that literally come soaring from the glass. Full-bodied, voluptuous and about as hedonistic as they come with lots of sweet fruit, this powerhouse effort has no hard edges and a great finish. Like a lot of Joey's wines, this pushes on the sweetness level, yet is still one sexy drink. Santa Barbara County’s Joey Tensley continues to make ripe, textured and voluptuous wines that deliver serious bang for the buck. The latest 2013s and 2014s are all outstanding. However, recent vintages are pushing on the sweetness level, and in a number of cases, there’s obvious residual sugar in the wines." Wine Advocate #220, Aug 2015 |
