Lot #235. Jean-Noël Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chaumes 2015

Description: Consists of 1 Bottle, 0.75L
Score: 89-91 NM.
"The 2015 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chaumes has a feisty nose with hints of wild fennel infusing the citrus fruit, complemented by orange peel and smoky aromas. The palate is balanced with crisp acidity on the entry. The acidity is well judged here and it counterbalances a touch of viscosity towards the finish, which is armed with lovely peach and freshly sliced pear notes. Delightful. Winemaker Caroline L'Estimée looked a bit downcast when I met her at the domaine that was so cold that blackbirds' legs had frozen onto telegraph wires. She was oppressed by the drudgery of completing official documents with respect to all the yields for the 2016 vintage, a bulging blue folder that had to be filled in by the end of that day. Winemaking is not all skipping through the vines on a spring day you know. It can be boring days doing admin - just like all of us. "The growing season was quite difficult. It was an early vintage. It was okay to keep the acidity. I started the harvest on 31 August," she told me. "We had two groups [of wine]. The first group did everything quite quickly before April in terms of finishing their sugar and another group whereby malolactic was fine but there were some barrels that took longer to digest the sugar. The first group was racked around April and the other in early August. The flowering was poor for the red wines that were cropped at just 25hl/ha although the yields for the whites are normal. We will bottle some of the village before December. It is a vintage that is fragrant and rich, but we have good structure and acidity, not sharp but perhaps slightly bitter (the same term used by Sylvain Pataille at the other end of the Côte d'Or in Marsannay the following day)." These were a good set of wines from Caroline. She is a fastidious winemaker and that showed through in her wines, although like many, they do not match up to her 2014s. That said, they should still provide plenty of delicious drinking, probably in the short to mid-term rather than long-term." And with that, my tasting was done and no doubt Caroline set to work filling in form after form." Neal Martin, Wine Advocate #228, Dec 2016
