93 VM. "Full ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of ripe dark berries, violet oil, candied licorice and smoky minerals. Sappy, expansive black raspberry and cherry liqueur flavors display a suave blend of concentration and vivacity, picking up a spicecake nuance with air. Finishes juicy, sweet and impressively long, offering lingering dark fruit and floral pastille flavors and slow-building tannins. If you're not able to score this somewhat mythical and enigmatic vigneron's unsulfured, fragile and -- in the US, at least -- expensive wines within a few kilometers of their birthplace, then, at least from my experience, it's worth asking if they're worth the chase. On the other hand, if you can catch them in prime form, they can be among the most breathtakingly pure and vibrant examples of Beaujolais you can hope to experience . . . . If you're still curious and lucky enough to find it, Metras' top-of-the-line L'Ultime bottling was produced in 2014, and, in proper form, might be among the handful of great wines from that outstanding vintage. Correct examples that I've drunk recently of 2009 and 2011 versions were flat-out profound . . ." Josh Raynolds, Vinous.com, Jun 2016 |
