97 AG. "The 2012 Barbaresco Pajé Vecchie Viti is wonderfully complete. Dark, ample and full-bodied, yet also very much in the classic mold of all these wines, the 2012 has so much to say. Herb, tobacco, licorice, menthol and earthiness fill out the wines broad, muscular frame. I would prefer to cellar the 2012 for at least a handful of years. My tasting with Luca Roagna was one of the highlights of my summer visit to Piedmont. Stated simply, Roagna's 2012 Barolos and Barbarescos are off the charts. The decision to reduce the amount of time the Barolos and Barbarescos spend in oak is beginning to pay off big time, as the wines show much more brightness and freshness than they did just a few years ago, and yet remain super-classic in style. Unfortunately, the smaller production wines are now quite expensive. To be honest, though, I find just as much pleasure in the more accessibly priced Barbaresco Pajé and Barolo Pira bottlings."
