Montrose 2012, 0.75L
Bordeaux Blend from St. Estephe, Bordeaux

“Produced in the magnificent new cellars at Montrose, this big, tannic wine is powerful and concentrated. It has something of the classic severity of a wine from this estate, but that's mitigated by the ripe, generous blackberry fruitiness and the final freshness of a 2012. A great success, to drink from 2022.” 95, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, May 2015

“From a blend of 37% Merlot, 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, Montrose managed to take advantage of the good weather that returned in October, and brought in its last grapes on 20 October. Its gravelly soil also meant it fared far better than the more clay-led St-Estèphe terroirs. Great structure with a wonderful floral aroma and touches of cedar, with good persistency. Astringency on the tannins suggests a good life ahead.” 94, Decanter, Apr 2015

The 2012 Montrose has a taut and focused bouquet with crisp blackberry, tobacco and light earthy scents on the nose. Fine vigour and class evident here. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry, fine acidity, lightly spiced with a nicely proportioned and focused finish. This is a solid, almost swarthy Montrose, though it is surpassed by more recent vintages. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index's Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. 94, Neal Martin, Vinous Feb 2022

Bouchard Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 2012, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy

"Deep, bright red. Knockout vibrant nose combines purple and red berries, crushed stone, violet and animal fur. Lush, thick and deep but with terrific chalky energy animating the middle palate. Conveys striking depth to its red fruit and floral flavors, with the 45% new oak practically invisible today. Finishes with huge but round, noble tannins and outstanding lingering sweetness. In a more opulent style than the potentially great 2013, and probably for drinking before that wine." 95, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Nov 2014

Daniel-Etienne Defaix Chablis 1er Cru Cote de Lechet 2012, 0.75L
Chardonnay from Chablis, Burgundy

"In fascinating contrast to “Vaillon”, Defaix’s “Côte de Lechet” is a master class in mineral precision. This remarkably steep site (a 45% gradient) with very poor soil produces a wine that Danny describes as embodying “the real, true mineral expression of Chablis.” Freshly blasted chalk dominates the nose, with notes of lemon, honey, and fresh herbs lurking underneath; still, this is a wine of minerality first and foremost. The family owns a 3.5-hectare parcel of 45-year-old vines in this distinctive cru, most of which are planted within a parcel known as the Clos des Moines." Rosenthal Wine Merchant

Philipponnat Clos de Goisses Extra Brut 2012, 0.75L
Champagne Blend from Champagne, Champagne

“The 2012 Champagne Clos de Goisses is true to character and is the most opulent and decadent expression. It is flush with a generous perfume and liqueur, with ripe apricot brûlée, toasted brioche, raspberry eau de vie, and saline. The palate is round and full, though light on its feet, with kirsch and a chalky texture. Its salinity makes up for the more modest acidity and contributes to a compelling and savory wine.” 97+, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck, Nov 2022

“The 2012 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses is a Champagne of extraordinary elegance and finesse. Silky and aromatic, the 2012 impresses with its mid-weight, refined personality. Hints of kirsch, red plum, flowers and chamomile open gently in the glass. Clos des Goisses is often a rich, vinous Champagne, but the 2012 comes across as restrained and understated in all the right ways. Its aging potential will be measured in decades not years. Sadly, severe spring frost took with it a startling 50% of the crop. According to Charles Philipponnat Pinot fared better than Chardonnay. Ultimately, though, the Goisses blend is a typical two-thirds Pinot and one-third Chardonnay. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter.” 97, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Nov 2021

“Fragrant and complex, this combines a full, ripe depth with a chalky, linear tension, its fruit balanced between a primary freshness and developed complexity. It’s generous in build, showing the ripeness of the vintage, yet it still feels closed, needing time to reveal its full potential. This is built for ageing, and it should enjoy a long and slow development. Disgorged: August 2021.” 96, Peter Liem, Decanter, Dec 2023

R.H. Coutier Millesime Grand Cru Brut 2012, 0.75L
Pinot Noir / Chardonnay from Ambonnay, Champagne

"... Shockingly tight for a Champagne from this warm, dry year. Lemon peel, white pepper, mint and crushed rocks abound. If tasting blind, I would never have guessed this to be a Pinot-based Champagne, such is its freshness and drive." 94 Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve 2012, 0.75L
Sangiovese from Colli Toscana Centrale, Tuscany

"The 2012 Flaccianello della Pieve, a selection of the estate's best fruit, presents a darker, more virile expression of Sangiovese. Here, too, the purity of the flavors is truly striking. Cinnamon, cloves, new leather, licorice and plums are some of the notes that soar from the glass. The 2012 is full-bodied and voluptuous, in classic Flaccianello style, but the new French oak is much better integrated than it often is at this stage, the result of a move to lower toast levels over the last few years. This is one of the finest young Flaccianellos I can remember. Simply put, the 2012 Flaccianello is a real stunner. Wow .... Vinous readers know I regard the Sorbo as Fontodi's flagship wine. While the 2012 is truly stratospheric, so is the Flaccianello. Judging by those two wines, it is clear Mother Nature smiled on Fontodi in 2012 ..." 97 Antonio Galloni, Vinous

"Manetti calls 2012 'the vintage of two faces': summer was very hot until mid-August, when some rain brought cooler temperatures which slowed down ripening. In chillier zones than Panzano, Sangiovese struggled to ripen, he says. Even more expressive than when it was initially released, the 2012 has a decidedly exotic manner. Saffron, liquorice and cardamom overlay violets and earth. The tannins are polished with an intriguing chalky texture. It's compact and full but balanced, with a core of vibrant acidity and a long explosive finish. This has the bones to age brilliantly." 97 Michaela Morris, Decanter Magazine

Vega-Sicilia Unico 2012, 0.75L
Tempranillo Blend from Ribera del Duero , Castilla y León

"I like the intensity to this, with dark tar and smoky notes followed by graphite, tobacco, bitter cacao and dark fruit. Powerful yet tight and compact, with firm and polished tannins. Structured and so long. Tasted from magnum." 97, James Suckling, Sep 2022

“This is at once fresh and elegant on first impression, with lovely hints of fragrant Turkish bazaar spices, game and dried mint lacing the crème de cassis, violet, and black and red licorice notes. Gliding across the palate, buoyed by fresh acidity and sculpted tannins, this expands to show deep notes of tarry smoke, fig cake, espresso and iron alongside the appealing fruit and spice. Long and creamy, offering both power and grace. Tinto Fino and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2037. 7,349 cases made, 601 cases imported.” 96, Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, Sep 2022

“The 2012 Único from magnum showed less ripe tannins in the context of other vintages like 2014 or 2004, as the year was very warm and dry and the plants got blocked and the tannins didn't ripen perfectly. There is a little more alcohol, and it's powerful but will always have a bit of rusticity. 3,537 magnums were filled in June 2018.” 95, Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate, Jan 2023

Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2012, 0.75L
Tempranillo Blend from La Rioja Alta, La Rioja

“The 2012 Rioja “Castillo Ygay” Gran Reserva Especial from Marqués de Murrieta is composed this year from a cépages of eighty-one percent tempranillo and nineteen percent mazuelo, with the vines of both varieties in excess of eighty years of age. Interestingly, the two grape varieties are aged separately for thirty-four months in cask, with the tempranillo aged in American oak barrels and the mazuelo in French oak casks. After the period of cask aging, the two components are blended and aged an additional twenty months in concrete tanks prior to botting, and then an additional three years in bottle in the cellar prior to release! The 2012 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserve Especial comes in at an even fourteen percent octane in this vintage and delivers a stunning aromatic constellation of black raspberries, cassis, Cuban cigar wrapper, a complex base of soil, brown spices, coconutty American oak and a topnote of woodsmoke. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and seamlessly balanced, with a velvety attack, stunning depth of fruit at the core, lovely soil signature and grip, ripe, buried tannins and precise focus on the long, refined and hauntingly beautiful finish. At twelve years of age this brilliant wine is certainly approachable, but it still possesses a serious chassis of tannin and will be an even more stunning wine ten or twenty years down the road. Great juice.” 98, John Gilman, View From The Cellar, Mar 2024

“The 2012 bottling of the Ygay Gran Reserva really ups the savoury character, with the Tempranillo buoyed by 19% Mazuelo, delivering bright fruits and fresh acidity. This is a vintage of true elegance. This wine was bottled in 2019, a blend of 81% Tempranillo aged in American oak and 19% Mazuelo (also known as Carignan) aged in French oak, each for 34 months. The Mazuelo brightens the wine and imbues it with such elegance. The Gran Reserva is sourced entirely from La Plana, located at nearly 500m, and its 80-year-old vines are all dedicated to this iconic bottling. Gorgeous fresh and savoury aromas of dried violet and rose petals, smoky clove and eucalyptus. The palate offers freshness around a core of red fruits. Fresh wild mint, ripe strawberries, notes of balsamic and turned earth are lifted up by a streak of graphite that cuts across the finish.” 97, Clive Pursehouse, Decanter, Jun 2024

“The 2012 Gran Reserva Especial Castillo Ygay is 81% Tempranillo and 19% Mazuelo sourced from La Plana vineyard, planted on the Ygay Estate, Rioja Alta. Aged for 34 months in French and American oak barrels, this wine offers displays a garnet color with a brick sheen. It reveals a complex aroma of bee wax, dried flowers, cassis, sour cherry, cedar and vanilla, with a candied layer. Dry, silky and fairly juicy, the fine-grained tannins and heightened acidity deliver a cleansing, long-lasting finish. This exceptional wine exudes energy and demonstrates proven aging potential, making it one to savor and age gracefully.” 97, Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous, Apr 2024

One True Vine Cabernet Sauvignon Fortunate Son 2012, 0.75L
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, California

"As for the Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines, there is the blend called Fortunate Son, and the 2012 edition is still in barrel. It displays opulence in its wonderfully sweet, pure blackberry and black currant fruit along with some earthiness, spice box, graphite and background oak. This is fleshy, rich, broad, and certainly capable of lasting ..." 95-97 Robert M. Parker, Jr., Wine Advocate
