“The 2021 Riesling Cuvée Colette is from the Bonnes Terres lieu-dit just underneath the Schlossberg, on granite. The vines are between 50 and 60 years old, rooting in deeper topsoil, so there never is hydric stress. The nose is shy, allowing only an occasional flicker of citrus, but the palate comes in with lovely focus and citric verve. Lemon zest and pith frame the juicy, light bodied flow. “The 2021 Morgon Cuvée Corcelette comes from vines averaging 50-years in age, this vineyard suffering less reduction in volume than others due to the sandy soils. It is aged in used barrels for around 9 months. It has a quite compelling and complex bouquet, with raspberry and wild strawberry, rose petal and light chalky scents. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, finely chiseled and lending tension. The acidity keeps this taut, focused, and quite minerally …. Bon vin. One of the original ‘Gang of Four’ disciples, Foillard is rightly esteemed as one of the leading Beaujolais producers, which is not reflected in market prices. Few wines represent better value than this. I have visited the Domaine several times over the years. On this occasion, I met with Fanny Bellenger, who works with Jean’s son Alex Foillard, to taste recent releases and take a quick tour of the winery. Unfortunately, due to the growing season in 2021, volumes are down 30%. The two 2020s I tasted from Alex Foillard are promising, especially the Brouilly that, when juxtaposing the two appellations, has more harmony and complexity than the Côte de Brouilly. "...The juice is pressed into barrel before primary fermentation and then Pierre-Yves leaves them alone as much as possible. Fermentation is always initiated by natural yeast and he does not stir the lees, rack the barrels or even filter the wines. Pierre-Yves also prefers unusual barrels – about 80% of them are 50% larger than normal Burgundy barrels. Depending on the vintage, most of the top wines are aged in new oak, but the larger barrels minimize the oak influence and also delay the malolactic fermentation. The cellar is also kept very cold to further delay the malolactic fermentation – which ideally finishes 8-9 months after harvest. Approximately 18 months after harvest the wines are lightly fined and then bottled. The extended elévage helps preserve aromatic intensity and purity as well as giving the wines the right balance for long-term ageing." Importer Notes

“Matured 18 months in traditional underground vats, the 2021 Clos des Bouquinardières reveals an abundance of herbs, white fruits, minerals and smoke, intertwined with a delicate, grilled character. Medium-bodied and fleshy with impressive depth at the core, it’s perfectly balanced with a mineral, crystalline texture that finishes chiseled and ethereal. It’s a seamless, complete wine of compelling purity and maturity. It's approachable now but also built to evolve gracefully over the next decade. Jérôme Bretaudeau, a well-known winemaker in Muscadet and France, began his winemaking in 2001 after working for a winegrower who was also a nurseryman. This gave him a precise vision of the quality of grafted plants and a desire to use ‘greffage à l’anglaise’ instead of the widely used omega grafting method. He cultivates his 18-hectare vineyard with cover crops and ploughing, following the principles of biodynamic farming thanks to his meeting with the late Guy Bossard, another great figure of Muscadet. He avoids using barrels to mature his wines and completes malolactic fermentation on all his cuvées. His wines are renowned for their freshness, crystalline tension, and depth.
