Jean Foillard Fleurie 2021, 0.75L
Gamay from Fleurie, Beaujolais
"From vines that are 20-70 years old. A shy nose reluctantly offers up its aromas of mostly red berry fruit that is cut with floral and earth wisps. The sleek and attractively textured middleweight flavors possess adequate density while preserving good delineation that carries over to the youthfully austere, focused and balanced finish." 92 Allen Meadows, Burghound

Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée Corcelette 2021, 0.75L
Gamay from Morgon, Beaujolais
“The 2021 Morgon Cuvée Corcelette comes from vines averaging 50-years in age, this vineyard suffering less reduction in volume than others due to the sandy soils. It is aged in used barrels for around 9 months. It has a quite compelling and complex bouquet, with raspberry and wild strawberry, rose petal and light chalky scents. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, finely chiseled and lending tension. The acidity keeps this taut, focused, and quite minerally …. Bon vin. One of the original ‘Gang of Four’ disciples, Foillard is rightly esteemed as one of the leading Beaujolais producers, which is not reflected in market prices. Few wines represent better value than this. I have visited the Domaine several times over the years. On this occasion, I met with Fanny Bellenger, who works with Jean’s son Alex Foillard, to taste recent releases and take a quick tour of the winery. Unfortunately, due to the growing season in 2021, volumes are down 30%. The two 2020s I tasted from Alex Foillard are promising, especially the Brouilly that, when juxtaposing the two appellations, has more harmony and complexity than the Côte de Brouilly. The standout from Jean Foillard is the Morgon Côte du Py, though readers should not overlook the Fleurie despite the vines suffering grillure in recent years.” 91 Neal Martin, Vinous.com, May 2023

Louis Claude Desvignes Morgon Javernieres 2021, 0.75L
Gamay from Morgon, Beaujolais
"There's no Impenitents bottling this year, so everything went into the 2021 Morgon Côte du Py Javernières, a brilliant effort in this challenging vintage. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of cherries, ripe plums, wild berries, vine smoke and petals, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with terrific mid-palate volume, ripe tannins, tangy acids and a long, penetrating finish .... As I've written before, this 13-hectare domaine produces some of the longest lived and most serious wines in the Beaujolais." 94 William Kelley, Wine Advocate

The medium-bodied palate is supple on the entry, extremely well balanced, surprisingly spicy with a finish that fans out wonderfully. Simply, one of the best Gevrey Villages you will find in 2021. "The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru, the usual blend of Crapiots and Perrières, has a beautifully defined bouquet with dark cherries, bergamot and wild hedgerow, very focused and classy. The palate is medium-bodied with a powdery texture, just a very small reduction at play, though that does not disguise the structure and substance on the finish. Wonderful. Jacques-Frederic Mugnier Bonnes-Mares 2021, 0.75L

“The 2021 Bonnes-Mares from Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is a stunning wine in the making. The sappy nose soars from the glass in a beautifully transparent blend of cherries, red plums, raw cocoa, pigeon, a complex base of chalky soil tones, woodsmoke, a touch of mustard seed and a deft framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, soil-driven and sports superb depth at the core, with lovely focus and complexity, fine-grained tannins and a very long, refined and seamlessly balanced finish. Jacques-Frederic Mugnier Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos de la Marechale Rouge 2021, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Nuits St. Georges, Burgundy
“Mugnier’s nearly ten-hectare monopole at the southern extreme of Prémeaux-Prissey has suffered in recent years: hail in 2018, coulure in 2019, drought in 2020, and frost in 2021. It has produced a bit more than half a normal harvest this year, but what is left is lovely indeed, with lush, pretty aromas of raspberry with floral notes and a delicate, supple texture on the palate that is ethereal yet oddly persistent. It is far from the most structured in the portfolio but is among the most approachable. (Drink between 2025-2040).” 93, Charles Curtis MW, Decanter, Jan 2022

Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 2021, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Chambolle Musisgny, Burgundy
“Bright, forward plummy fruit with accents of spice and leather dominate the aromas of this youthful, energetic wine. The texture is lively and fresh, and the accent is firmly on perfume rather than muscle. The light body and crisp acidity belie the subtle persistence on the palate. The wine is a blend of half declassified premier cru grapes from Les Plantes and half from the village-level portion of the Combe d'Orveau that were both picked on 21 September. The fruit is vinified with a very gentle hand, and fans of traditional Chambolle-Musigny should love this bottling. (Drink between 2025-2045).” 92, Charles Curtis MW, Decanter, Jun 2022

Mongeard-Mugneret Fixin Vielle Vigne 2021, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Fixin, Burgundy
.“Although full and generous at the same time, our Fixin "Fondemens" will surprise by its crimson and steady color. Its fruity nose reminds a red fruit coulis, and in mouth it will amaze by its greediness and its frankness characteristic of Pinot Noir. They have a good acid content and are endowed with a solidity and substance which places them among wines that are best laid down for a certain time. When young they possess animal aromas suggestive of pelts and musk. These are ample wines which develop their bouquet over time as they mature.” Producer notes

Pierre Yves Colin Morey Nuits Saint Georges 2021, 0.75L
Pinot Noir from Nuits St. Georges, Burgundy
"...The juice is pressed into barrel before primary fermentation and then Pierre-Yves leaves them alone as much as possible. Fermentation is always initiated by natural yeast and he does not stir the lees, rack the barrels or even filter the wines. Pierre-Yves also prefers unusual barrels – about 80% of them are 50% larger than normal Burgundy barrels. Depending on the vintage, most of the top wines are aged in new oak, but the larger barrels minimize the oak influence and also delay the malolactic fermentation. The cellar is also kept very cold to further delay the malolactic fermentation – which ideally finishes 8-9 months after harvest. Approximately 18 months after harvest the wines are lightly fined and then bottled. The extended elévage helps preserve aromatic intensity and purity as well as giving the wines the right balance for long-term ageing." Importer Notes

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Saint-Joseph 2021, 0.75L
Syrah from St. Joseph, Rhône
"A tasting of the various constituent lieux-dits revealed that the Bachesson parcel had a peppery side and its characteristic rose scent, and an unmistakably granitic texture. The Chalaix lieu-dit was precise, fine, with no huge concentration but good balance. Lieu-dit Dardouille was looking promising, with good weight and length. The finished blend of the domaine’s St-Joseph is likely to be neat, precise and fresh, with a distinct mineral side, one to drink relatively young. There will be no separate bottling of Clos Florentin this year due to frost." 93 Matt Walls, Decanter Magazine
"The 2021s here are certainly strong wines in the vintage. The 2021 Saint Joseph is a healthy dense ruby/purple hue and offers textbook Saint Joseph aromas and flavors of black fruit (there's a hint of red fruit as well), graphite, ground pepper, and some meaty, bloody nuances. Medium-bodied, it has beautiful tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and outstanding length." 92 Jeb Dunnuck

Saint-Damien Gigondas Vieilles Vignes 2021, 0.75L
Grenache / Mourvèdre from Gigondas, Rhône
“The 2021 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is the only Gigondas produced by Domaine Saint-Damien in this complicated vintage. On the positive side, that means some old-vine fruit that would usually go into the special cuvées is present in the Vieilles Vignes. The result is an outstanding achievement laced with rose water, red currant and raspberry aromas, complemented by meaty and spicy gradations. Fleshy and polished, this stimulating 2021 red flawlessly integrates its 14.6% alcohol, dazzling with a juicy finish.” 92, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous Aug 2023
“The only cuvée to be bottled this vintage because of widespread frost, the 2021 Gigondas Classique Vieilles Vignes is a lovely effort, loaded with ripe cherries. An 80-20 blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre, it's plush, ripe and concentrated, with a long, velvety finish. It's a standout effort that shouldn't be ignored. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.” 92, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, May 2024
