Case Basse di Gianfranco Soldera Toscana Sangiovese 2019, 0.75L
Sangiovese from Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany

"Gianfranco Soldera is without question Montalcino's most iconic producer. At their best, his Brunellos are monumental examples of the heights Sangiovese can reach in Montalcino …. Soldera's meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard is legendary. His are some of the most well maintained, manicured vines I have ever seen. No pesticides or herbicides are employed and only organic fertilizers are used. The wines are made using natural yeasts and see extended periods of aging in large Slavonian oak barrels. Soldera's Case Basse vineyard measures roughly two hectares and was planted in 1972. The Intistieti vineyard is larger and covers about four and a half hectares. It was planted in 1973. Case Basse is the more fertile of the plots. Beginning with the 1973 vintage fruit from this vineyard was used to make Vino da Tavola Rosso (that era's rough equivalent to Rosso di Montalcino) until 1990, when Soldera deemed the vines to be of sufficient age to make Brunello. Intistieti is a much poorer soil, and therefore yields wines of greater complexity, structure and aging potential. The estate's early Brunellos were all made from the Intistieti vineyard. In 1990 Soldera released his first Brunello from the Case Basse vineyard (a normal bottling) and a Riserva from Intistieti. When Soldera felt a wine didn't merit the Brunello designation he declassified the wine and bottled it as Vino da Tavola Intistieti. It would be logical to assume that Intistieti (the wine) is made from Intistieti (the vineyard) but as we shall see, that hasn't always been the case …. Readers should note that following his most recent disagreement with the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, which included, among other things, being kicked out of the Consorzio, Soldera has decided to release all of his new wines as 'Toscana Sangiovese.' These are the same wines that would have previously been released as Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. As always, these remain some of the most compelling and transcendental wines being made anywhere in the world.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto Rosso di Montalcino 2020, 0.75L
Brunello from Montalcino, Tuscany

"The Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto 2020 Rosso di Montalcino is bright and loaded with a fresh, buoyant personality focused on red cherry, cassis and bitter almond. There are hints of ferrous earth and crushed aspirin that add extra contours and edging to this fun, easy-drinking Rosso. I certainly wouldn't mind this bottle next to a classic wood-fired pizza Margherita, but only 6,000 bottles were made, so I imagine availability will be limited." 91, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Le Potazzine Brunello di Montalcino 2017, 0.75L
Sangiovese from Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany

"Aromas of crushed mint, pressed rose and perfumed berry mingle with warm spice in this dazzling red. Thanks to some of the highest vineyard altitudes in the denomination, it boasts vibrancy and finesse in its flavors of ripe black cherry, juicy blood orange, licorice and crushed mint. Taut, elegant tannins and fresh acidity keep it balanced and focused." 97 Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast

"The ladies of Le Potazzine make a terrific bottle of Brunello, and their high-elevation vineyards are especially important in maintaining freshness in a scorching-hot vintage such as this. The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino offers a pretty succession of wild berry, cherry and plum aromas, along with light spice, crushed flowers and perfumed potting soil. This wine is also distinguished by a touch of bay leaf and maybe a warmer note of cured tobacco as well. This is an impressive effort." 95 Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Silvio Nardi Brunello di Montalcino 2017, 0.75L
Sangiovese from Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany

"This is a beautiful, fresh 2017 Brunello with fine tannins and a medium body of cherry, bark, cedar and pine-needle flavors. It’s long and polished with ultra-fine tannins and fresh acidity. Nicely done for the vintage. Drink or hold." 94 James Suckling

"Tenute Silvio Nardi is an estate worth visiting. It occupies one of the most extreme locations in the appellation, tucked away into the hills north of the town in a wild no-man's-land of its own. Once you get there, there is a cozy, warm feeling, with vineyards carved out of the surrounding Mediterranean shrub oaks and forests. If you taste forest floor, button mushroom and wild flowers in the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino, you could easily imagine this magical place. This is a silky, mid-weight Brunello with a cool-climate character (which is preserved despite the hot vintage). An ample 114,000 bottles are hitting the market now." 93 Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
