"Sourced from several parcels of the estate that are planted in rocky, white soils (Oxfordian limestones referred to as “caillottes” and “griottes”) with steep, east-southeast exposures, this cuvée is the most full-bodied and structured of the three core Sancerres of the domaine. Vinified in stainless steel with a late racking to insure that the wine captures the essence of the terroir, allowing the Sauvignon Blanc’s raw material rather than any oak dressing to carry the day. The wine is bottled in September of the year following harvest. “The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes opens in the glass with aromas of cherries and red berries mingled with sweet spices, loamy soil and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated, with fine concentration and a seamless, elegantly muscular profile, it's a fine success that's a worthy follow-up to the 2019 rendition. Laurent Lignier began his harvest on August 27, reporting below-average yields and finished alcohols between 13% and 14%. Once again, the result is a fine vintage for both his domaine holdings and négociant sources—the latter, amounting to some 3.5 hectares of vines, now clearly distinguished in our reviews. As readers will know, winemaking is pretty classical at this address, with a short cold maceration, two to three weeks' maceration with one pigéage and one rémontage per day and maturation in barrels, some one-third of which are new—if possible, without racking—for fully 22 months in the domaine's cold cellars. The average age of the vines is 35 years. After harvest, the juice is fermented in stainless steel for approximately two weeks; then the wine is racked into large oak 'botti' to age at least 18 additional months and frequently longer before being bottled. "If there is any wine that defines the Ferrando “oeuvre” it is this one: the white label Carema. No single wine in our portfolio is more illustrative of our work than this brilliant rendition of Nebbiolo. Produced exclusively from the Nebbiolo grape planted in a series of vineyards that sit beneath Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco) in a broad amphitheatre with full southern exposure overlooking the river, Dora Baltea, that runs from the snow-capped mountains south through the Valle d’Aosta into the northwestern range of Piedmont slicing the city of Ivrea in half. The vines are trained in a special way on pergola (known as “tupin” in local dialect) to obtain maximum exposure to the sun in this high altitude district and are planted to soils that are dominated by slate. "Dusty cherry and crushed fall leaves evolve slowly into a deeper display of citrus-tinged raspberries, cinnamon and sweet white smoke as the 2018 Rosso Granomelo blossoms in the glass. This seduces with a silky wave of pure, ripe red berries and spices, as brilliant acidity lends vibrancy and saline-mineral tones add a salty flair. The 2018 has energy to burn, coming across as primary and wild, yet also refined. An herbal twang and grippy tannins collect toward the close. It leaves the palate classically dry, caked with an almost-chalky coating; however, it’s mouthwatering all the same. The contrasts here keep you guessing with each tilt of the glass, a mix of sheer drinkability and noble stature. This is a gorgeous glass of Sangiovese. The Granomelo hails from Ficomontanino’s Melogranino vineyard. It goes through spontaneous fermentation with a two-month maceration, and then refines completely in concrete. I’ll be following this wine closely in the vintages to come. A selection of inspired Tuscan wines arrived from Maria Sole at Ficomontanino. This is a 12-hectare property located in the extreme southeast of Tuscany, bordering Umbria and Lazio. In fact, geographically speaking, the climate here is closer to northern Lazio and mountainous Umbria than it is to Tuscany. The vineyards were originally planted by Maria Sole's grandfather in the 1960s, yet winemaking was more of a hobby for him. She took the reins of the family farm from her father after being bitten by the wine bug and was inspired by the likes of Tenute Dettori in Sardinia. Her education at Slow Food’s University of Culinary Arts at Pollenzo is also a huge influence in the winemaking here, choosing natural practices in the vineyards, spontaneous fermentations, long macerations, neutral aging vessels, no fining or filtration, and a minimum use of sulfur. "The 2014 Montefalco Rosso San Valentino is the result of a very difficult vintage for Paolo Bea, though you’d never know it. Here I’m finding an exotic, layered expression, as rosy florals and peppery herbs give way to sweet, crushed strawberries with smoky minerals, hints of soy and rich brown spices. Soft textures effortlessly wash across the senses with feminine weight, displaying pure red and blue fruits, and giving way to a coating of liquid florals and saturating minerals. The finish is long and grippier than expected, yet purity is the name of the game, as pretty berry fruits resonate over a gentle twang of youthful tannin. Giampiero’s vineyards were hit hard by downy mildew in 2014, and all of the fruit he saved went into this year's San Valentino.
