"Dark red. Intensely perfumed aromas of ripe blackberry and cherry, complemented by exotic sandalwood and fresh rose. Ripe and dense but pure, with vibrant red and dark berry flavors, refreshing minerality and a suave toasty note. This is almost lavish in fruit expression, with a sweet floral pastille note on the long, silky finish. Compelling stuff, with the balance to age. Eric Sussman told me that he likes to work with barrels made from staves dried for a full three years, and that he doesn't rely on a single cooper. ‘I mix as I see fit, looking at the fruit, then choosing the cooper,’ he explained. The soft-spoken Sussman is a methodical, thoughtful winemaker with extensive experience in Burgundy (at Comte Armand, with Pascal Marchand) and an extended stint at Dehlinger under his belt. His wines reflect his Old World training: they are pure expressions of variety and site, and are characterized by silky textures and an emphasis on balance over power."
