"Medium red. The most successful of these 1999 Barbarescos, the Santo Stefano offers much vibrancy and freshness in its suggestions of roses, spices, tobacco, smoke, menthol, scorched earth and red cherries. It displays excellent length and purity of expression in a less opulent style than the 2000 or 2001. This deceptively medium bodied, structured Barbaresco shut down quickly in the glass. It will be at it best after another few years of bottle age and should drink well until at least age 20."

Italy grows more indigenous grape varieties than any other country and produces wine in all 20 of its regions. From Piedmont's Nebbiolo to Tuscany's Sangiovese, its finest wines pair structure and bright acidity with a strong sense of place.
In Italy's northwest, Piedmont is home to Nebbiolo, the grape behind the powerful, perfumed and long-lived reds of Barolo and Barbaresco. Fog-shrouded hills and calcareous soils define its greatest wines.
Produces Nebbiolo of slightly more elegance and approachability than neighboring Barolo, offering perfume, finesse and firm structure.
