"The 1998 Bachelet Charmes started out of the blocks a bit jammy and showing a fair bit of the weedy side of the Charmes climat, but the wine rallied beautifully with air to really show its true colors. The nose eventually blossomed into a very polished and elegant mélange of strawberries, red cherries, herb tones, coffee, fine minerality, cedar and a topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and beautifully focused, with excellent acids, a fine core of pure fruit, modest tannins, and excellent length and grip on the refined finish. It is beginning to really drink well, but another couple of years of bottle age can only help the wine improve. Excellent juice and another stellar example of the underrated 1998 vintage."
