"Brought up half in tank and half in foudre, the 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is a fabulously textured, elegant and expressive 1999 that has lots of spice-box, chocolate, smoked meats, tobacco and dark fruit aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, concentrated and rich, it's fully mature and drinking at point, but it should hold nicely going forward."

Syrah (Shiraz) produces dark, powerful reds with black fruit, pepper and smoked-meat notes. It yields elegant, perfumed wines in the northern Rhone and bold, rich styles in Australia.
