"It had been a couple of years since I last crossed paths with the 1981 Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva and, as this is a wine that I am happy to drink anytime or anywhere, I was very pleased to see it cruising along beautifully at its zenith of peak drinkability. The deep, complex and utterly classic nose soars from the glass and a vibrant mélange of cherries, red plums, Rioja spice tones, new leather, orange zest, nutskins, a touch of saffron and a beautiful base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, medium-full and very intensely flavored, with a sappy core of fruit, superb soil inflection, modest tannins and outstanding length and grip on the tangy and perfectly focused finish. Just a beautiful bottle of Rioja that will continue to delight for decades to come."

Spain has the largest area under vine of any country and a deep tradition of oak-aged reds. Tempranillo-based wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, alongside Priorat's Garnacha and Carinena, anchor its fine-wine reputation.
