"The 1998 Clos Vougeot is a lovely example of the vintage that is still a few years away from primetime drinking, but is going to make everyone happy who had the good sense to put this vintage in their cellar. The nose is already quite terrific, as it jumps from the glass in a blaze of black cherries, plums, a distinct touch of black truffle, espresso, developing notes of forest floor, fresh thyme and just a deft framing of oak spice. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish and intensely flavored, with great focus and length, good mid-palate depth, modest tannins and lovely grip on the long and classy finish. Just a lovely â98."
