"The 1988 is another red Burgundy vintage that has witnessed its reputation ebb and flow as the wines have slowly evolved in bottle, but even the most recalcitrant critics of this vintage would find little to complain about with the lovely Lafarge Clos des Chênes. The bouquet is excellent, as it delivers a fine blend of plums, cherries, Christmas tree spice, sous bois and other autumnal tones, cedar and a great base of soil. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and beautifully tangy, with great complexity and grip, a sweet core of fruit, lovely acids and a bit of firm tannin still waiting to fade away on the very long, complex and soil-driven finish. This is an extremely classy bottle of Volnay that is just a terrific 1988."
