"Having followed this wine since its inception, it has consistently been one of the greatest Barberas I have ever tasted. The wine comes from vineyards that traditionally produced 70,000 bottles of Barbera. However, winemaker Riccardo Cotarella crop-thinned and cut yields to only one ton per acre, resulting in only 18,000 bottles. Made from a blend of vineyards owned by such producers as Bologna, Prunotto, Vietti, Coppo, and Chiarlo, the wine was aged in new oak casks for 12 months. There was no racking, and it was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Its opaque purple color is followed by sensational notes of blackberry and strawberry jam, mocha, smoke, and dried herbs. Fabulously concentrated, with remarkable viscosity and thickness that easily absorb the new oak."

Italy grows more indigenous grape varieties than any other country and produces wine in all 20 of its regions. From Piedmont's Nebbiolo to Tuscany's Sangiovese, its finest wines pair structure and bright acidity with a strong sense of place.
In Italy's northwest, Piedmont is home to Nebbiolo, the grape behind the powerful, perfumed and long-lived reds of Barolo and Barbaresco. Fog-shrouded hills and calcareous soils define its greatest wines.
