"Gamey, smoky notes rise from the glass of 2006 Le Carignan, followed by walnut oil and blackberry as the wine opens to the air. Quite firm, although subtly oily in texture, this coats and clings with abundant tannin, and bitter-sweet emphasis on walnut . . . . Sylvain Fadat relies on some outstanding Alsace and Southern Rhone growers to supply him with used foudres so that virtually all of his wines (including whites) ferment and mature in large barrels or casks. A terraced Cinsault vineyard on Marne chalk-clay and basalt planted in 1900 several miles outside of Montpeyroux was recently rescued by Fadat with the help of the owner, his friend Alain Robert (whose original intention had been to plant olives, and whose name appears on the label, with Fadat as vinificateur)."
