"The 1990 Rouget Echézeaux remains deeply embedded in its opulent primary fruit stage, having closed down only a bit since its early, flamboyant days of youth. The nose explodes from the glass with vibrant black cherry, plum, coffee, game, vinesmoke, herb tones, violets and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is a big, beautifully delineated fruit bomb, that will eventually allow more of the soil flavors to emerge, but which today is all about the fruit. The finish is long, palate staining, and beautifully balanced, with plenty of ripe tannin in place to carry the wine decades. Great juice in need of time for those that want to see more complexity, but hardly a crime to drink today for those who treasure Burgundy for its sweet, youthful fruit. This wine offers the best of both worlds, and years of potential ahead of it."
