"The 1994 Fontenys is simply one of the best premier crus I have tasted from the vintage, with the legendary old vines (no one knows how far back they date, but at least prior to 1880!) have turned out a very fine bottle. The nose offers up a deep and complete mélange of sweet cassis, plums, grilled meats, chocolate, herb tones, earth and a deft touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and round, with emerging notes of maturity, beautiful focus and a juicy core of fruit. The finish is long, complex and modestly tannic, with fine length and grip. This is really impressive for a 1994, and would have no problem holding its own in flights of better vintage wines. It is delicious to drink now, but I suspect that there is plenty more to come in terms of aromatic and flavor complexity."
