89 RP "The 1988 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde is nearly outstanding, and may ultimately merit a better review after another one or two years in the bottle. It has that classic bacon fat, smoky, roasted, raspberry fruitiness, rich, full-bodied, expansive flavors, an attractive richness and length, reflecting impeccable winemaking." The northern Rhone's most prestigious red appellation, producing perfumed, elegant Syrah, often co-fermented with a little Viognier, from steep terraced slopes.
Syrah (Shiraz) produces dark, powerful reds with black fruit, pepper and smoked-meat notes. It yields elegant, perfumed wines in the northern Rhone and bold, rich styles in Australia.
