"The 2004 Champs Chenys was raised in fifty percent new oak, and shows a bit of toast on the nose as a result. However, the wood is beautifully integrated on the palate, and I have little fear that this consistently outstanding Gevrey AC bottling will not age as gracefully as many of its predecessors. I have been following and cellaring this cuvée since the 1993 vintage, and have never been disappointed with the results. The nose on the 2004 is a fine blend of cherries, red berries, coffee, grilled meats, mustard, earth and a touch of toasty oak. On the palate the wine is fullish, deep and intensely flavored, with impressive nascent complexity, fine balance, and a long, tangy and modestly tannic finish. Lovely juice."
