"A blend of four different climats that have been all organic since 2008, the 2013 Morgon was aged in 10- to 15-year-old barrels from Christophe Roumier and de la Vougeraie. It has a very pure bouquet of small red cherries mixed with touches of orange blossom and a hint of licorice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity, and a very detailed, quite mineral-driven finish that lingers long in the mouth. Excellent. Readers should refer to last yearâs Beaujolais report for background on Julien Sunier. This time I met him along with his younger brother Antoine and a small group of like-minded organic/biodynamic winemakers, I asked Julien about the 2013 vintage. '2013 was tough in terms of mildew pressure with a lot of work in the vineyard. We cropped at 35 hectoliter per hectare. I was happy with that as some friends did less. We finished the harvest on October 14. It was almost snowing that day! We had started on September 18, but because I have three different altitudes [of vineyard], I have to stop and start. We didnât extract much color, though it was a long fermentation and the alcohol levels came in below 12 degrees.' I tasted Julienâs two 2013s from Fleurie and Morgon, and both should be in your cellar. These are complex, thrilling examples of their type, laden with cool fruit and a sense of focus and precision. My only complaint? That Julien does not have a dozen wines for me to taste!"
