"The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from a vineyard in Perdriel, in the classic quarter of Luján de Cuyo. It matured in French oak barrels (new and used) for some 12 to 14 months. There was a very acute note of blood and iron, call it mineral if you want, that is very distinct (I also detected it in a wine that had part of this grapes in the blend). Underneath you have the textbook Cabernet aromas, the herbal side but with good ripeness, with black and blue fruit. The palate is very sleek, with very fine tannins, softer than your average Cabernet. Roberto de la Mota looks for more elegance achieved with the vinification in small tanks and extracting early on (before the alcohol can extract harsher tannins). The soils of Perdriel in the bed of the Mendoza River are quite shallow and with lots of stones, also provide this quality of tannins. Great classical Mendoza Cabernet. I met with Roberto de la Mota and his partner in Mendel Anabel Sielecki in Madrid to taste the latest releases from the winery. They have planted 20 hectares of high-density vineyards (6,900 plants per hectare) in Altamira, one of the hottest zones (in terms of attention, not weather!) in the Valle de Uco in Mendoza, now that the name has been freed and the zone delimited and defined."

The world's most planted premium red grape, yielding deeply colored, tannic and structured wines with cassis, cedar and graphite notes. Firm tannins and acidity make it exceptionally age-worthy, whether as a varietal or the backbone of a Bordeaux blend.
