Joseph Phelps has been on a hot streak since the 1991 vintage, having turned in outstanding efforts in 1992, even more exhilarating 1993s, and blockbuster 1994s. Joseph Phelps was one of the first California wineries to recognize the potential for Mediterranean-styled wines. His Vin du Mistral series has always been good, but recent vintages have jumped significantly in quality. The 1994 Le Mistral is a 30% Mourvedre, 20% Syrah, 30% Grenache, and 20% Petite Sirah blend that should prove to be outstanding. The wine offers up a knock-out, peppery, sweet, jammy, black-raspberry-scented nose followed by a luscious, viscous texture, full body, and outstanding ripeness with no hard tannin or astringency. It will provide a savory, large-scaled, fleshy glassful of wine after its release in spring, 1996.
