"Theo Haart is one of the few winemakers in Germany that continues to utilize indigenous yeasts for all his fermentations (other noteworthy practitioners of this are the J. J. Prüm and the Maximin Grünhäuser estates), and the result is always a set of wines that offer a bit of riesling petrol most often associated with Alsatian examples of the varietal. I do not know if this makes for fundamentally better riesling, but the Haart 2002 Kabinett is certainly a lovely expression of the vintage. The nose offers up a succulent and beautifully pure mélange of white cherries, peach, plenty of slate and a topnote of spring flowers. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, complex and racy, with fine depth at the core, precision focus, bright, zesty acids, and just a bit of emerging petrol on the finish. This is a kabinett that delivers lovely shape and cut."
