"Chopin-Groffier's 1993 are well-made wines that manage to capture more fruit, without the hard, astringent tannin and tart acidity found in many wines of the vintage. Chopin-Groffier's style, which utilizes up to two-thirds whole berry fermentation, emphasizes Pinot Noir's fruit character. All of his wines have good structure, but are not excessively tannic . . . . the Clos de Vougeot is . . . an outstanding wine. It reveals wonderful purity, gobs of black-cherry fruit, a sweet mid-palate, medium body, firm tannin, and noticeable acidity in the finish. It will benefit from . . . cellaring and will keep . . . . More and more I am convinced that Daniel Chopin is the true heir apparent to the great Henri Jayer. Chopin's wines exhibit extraordinary purity, flavor, ripeness, and richly fragrant personalities. It is a shame Chopin-Groffier does not have a large domaine or more great vineyards. Even his lower level wines can be remarkably seductive red burgundies. The wines are also consistent. For example, few Burgundians made better wines than Chopin-Groffier did in 1991 and 1992."
