"As I reported last year when the wines were still in barrel, the 1999 Côte-Rôties are awesome. The monster 1999 Côte-Rôtie Côte Rozier is tannic and backward, but the tannin is sweet and the fruit dominated by smoky black currant/cassis. Notes of incense, minerals, oak, and earth as well as a hint of melted road tar are present in this full-bodied, massive Côte-Rôtie . . . . Note: The Gaillard wines I tasted were all cuvées selected by David Hinkle of North Berkeley Imports . . . . In contrast to Gaillard's other cuvées, the North Berkeley cuvées are aged for a shorter period in new oak (12 versus 18 months)."

The world's most influential fine-wine producer and the benchmark for Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and the Rhone. Its appellation (AOC) system codifies geography, grape and method, and its wines set the global standard for age-worthiness and terroir expression.
Spans the Syrah-driven northern crus of Cote-Rotie and Hermitage and the Grenache-based blends of the warmer south, led by Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Its wines are known for power, spice and warmth.
The northern Rhone's most prestigious red appellation, producing perfumed, elegant Syrah, often co-fermented with a little Viognier, from steep terraced slopes.
Syrah (Shiraz) produces dark, powerful reds with black fruit, pepper and smoked-meat notes. It yields elegant, perfumed wines in the northern Rhone and bold, rich styles in Australia.
