"A wine I've been lucky enough to have multiple times recently, the 2012 Hermitage Les Greffieux is a full-bodied, deeply fruited, concentrated and blockbuster effort that's stays elegant, polished and balanced. Exhibiting incredible amounts of bloody meat, olive tapenade, campfire and sweet, expansive fruit . . . . Michel Chapoutier has once again produced one of the reference-point lineups for the entire RhĂ´ne Valley. Certainly, his 2012s lived up to my billing last year, and theyâre easily some of the finest efforts produced in the vintage, not only with his top cuvees in Hermitage and CĂ´te RĂ´tie, but also in the up-and-coming appellation of St Joseph, as well as in Condrieu (where his Coteaux du Chery is one of the finest in the appellation), St PĂŠray and Crozes Hermitage. You can see my thrilled reviews on his 2012 Southern RhĂ´nes in Issue 215. His 2012 whites were all reviewed last year from bottle, but they were included again in the massive tasting at this estate this year, so I opted to include them again. They all showed as good, if not better, than last year. Tasted out of bottle this year, the Le Meal, Pavillon and lâErmite came in at the top of their barrel reviews from last year, which puts them on par with what was accomplished in 2009 and 2010. Thatâs shocking to me, but the proof is in the glass, as they say."

The world's most influential fine-wine producer and the benchmark for Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and the Rhone. Its appellation (AOC) system codifies geography, grape and method, and its wines set the global standard for age-worthiness and terroir expression.
Spans the Syrah-driven northern crus of Cote-Rotie and Hermitage and the Grenache-based blends of the warmer south, led by Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Its wines are known for power, spice and warmth.
Produces some of the world's most powerful and long-lived Syrah from a single granite hill, yielding dense, structured reds and rich whites.
Syrah (Shiraz) produces dark, powerful reds with black fruit, pepper and smoked-meat notes. It yields elegant, perfumed wines in the northern Rhone and bold, rich styles in Australia.
