"The British wine trade went to town with this vintage. Both Harvey's and Saccone & Speed, both of which I was connected with at this period, each listed a wide range of 1952s for 'laying down,' the latter prefacing their offer by stating that 'We hold a further extensive range of fine wines of the 1945, 1947 and 1949 vintages. These will be offered at their maturity' (having, I suspect, sold the best to favoured customers when first put on the market). Most clarets were bottled by merchants, classed growths such as Ch Calon-Ségur averaging 12 shillings a bottle - roughly half the price of château-bottled first growths. Prices were reasonable which meant, really, that they were not very profitable for the producers. The resurgence of interest in wine in the USA was only in its relatively early stages and markets for quality wine outside (impoverished) Europe did not exist. We had Bordeaux to ourselves. The actual growing season was very satisfactory up until September which was cold and unsettled. The harvest was fairly early . . ."

The world's most influential fine-wine producer and the benchmark for Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and the Rhone. Its appellation (AOC) system codifies geography, grape and method, and its wines set the global standard for age-worthiness and terroir expression.
The world's largest fine-wine region, built around blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Divided by the Gironde estuary into the structured Left Bank and the plush, Merlot-led Right Bank, it is the historic benchmark for age-worthy claret and sweet Sauternes.
The Left Bank appellation prized for perfumed, silky and elegant Cabernet-based wines. Gravel soils yield claret of aromatic finesse and refinement.
An aromatic red grape lending perfume, red fruit and a leafy, savory edge. It thrives in the Loire and as a key blending partner in Bordeaux, especially Saint-Emilion.
The world's most planted premium red grape, yielding deeply colored, tannic and structured wines with cassis, cedar and graphite notes. Firm tannins and acidity make it exceptionally age-worthy, whether as a varietal or the backbone of a Bordeaux blend.
Produces plush, supple, fruit-forward reds with plum and chocolate notes. Softer and earlier-maturing than Cabernet, it adds flesh and roundness to blends and stars in Right Bank Bordeaux.
A deeply colored, tannic Bordeaux blending grape adding color, structure and floral, spicy complexity in small proportions.
