"This was the second or third bottle of â78 Gaunoux Grands Epenots that I have crossed paths with, and I wish I had a case of this outstanding wine in my cellar. The nose is deep, complex and pure, soaring from the glass in a grand cru caliber mĂ©lange of red and black cherries, quince, strawberries, woodsmoke, sous bois, a bit of game, fine soil tones and a topnote of Asian spice. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, complex and laser-like in its focus, with a great core of fruit, melting tannins, outstanding acidity, and great length and grip on the palate-staining finish. This wine is just now reaching its plateau of maturity (or may still have a bit more qualitative climbing still to do), and should continue to dazzle for another twenty or more years. A great 1978, and a riveting example of Pommard from a winemaker at the peak of his powers."
