"The 1986 de Fargues was picked over four tries through the vineyard, with the heart of the harvest picked between October 26 and November 6 under nigh perfect humid conditions. It has an iridescent amber hue. The nose is soft and plush with scents of golden syrup, fresh fig and marmalade. There is real power here, but there is something also mellow and alluring. The palate is very sensual on the entry, a little lower in acidity than the 1988. There is great depth to the ‘86 with luscious marmalade and quince notes that inform the rounded, botrytis-rich finish. Marvellous. Tasted April 2013.

The world's largest fine-wine region, built around blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Divided by the Gironde estuary into the structured Left Bank and the plush, Merlot-led Right Bank, it is the historic benchmark for age-worthy claret and sweet Sauternes.
Produces the world's most celebrated sweet wines, made from Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc affected by noble rot. Rich, honeyed and remarkably long-lived, they balance sweetness with vibrant acidity.
Yields crisp, aromatic whites with citrus, herb and grassy notes. It shines in the Loire, Bordeaux blends and around the world for its refreshing zip.
Prized both for age-worthy dry whites and, when affected by noble rot, the great sweet wines of Sauternes. It offers waxy texture and honeyed depth.
