"Shiny dark red. Violet, blueberry, licorice feature in a bouquet finding its way, has lucid qualities, a square shape. The palate is close-knit, darker than usual for Combard, rolls with a heart-on-its-sleeve nature, holds black cherry and grainy, dark tannins. It is firm, with a note of black olives, out on its own on the finish. This is southern, sudiste wine with northern nerve, is compact. The tannins have scale, and are OK, will settle in; for now, they are assertive, and rule the finish. This carries interest for the drinker. Decanting advised."

The world's most influential fine-wine producer and the benchmark for Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and the Rhone. Its appellation (AOC) system codifies geography, grape and method, and its wines set the global standard for age-worthiness and terroir expression.

The northern Rhone's most prestigious red appellation, producing perfumed, elegant Syrah, often co-fermented with a little Viognier, from steep terraced slopes.
Syrah (Shiraz) produces dark, powerful reds with black fruit, pepper and smoked-meat notes. It yields elegant, perfumed wines in the northern Rhone and bold, rich styles in Australia.
