"This is a wonderful, mature Grand-Puy-Lacoste from a period when the Pauillac estate could do little wrong. A garnet, russet core with tawny rim, it has a typical Lacoste bouquet with a veritable forest of cedar, pine cones, minerals, cold stones and a touch of blackberry leaf. Very fresh and vigorous. The palate has a wonderful sense of natural balance, racy acidity, what must have been firm tannins now softened with good weight. Not particular complex but it has a thrilling sense of symmetry and poise. Sweet red-berried fruit on the finish that somehow reminds me of a mature Cheval Blanc. Wonderful, austere claret that just begs another sip."
