"Tasted at the 1947 dinner at The Square, London. One of the greatest wines of the 20th century? This is the third time that I have tasted the 1947 and here it effortlessly cruised to many attendeesâ wine of the night and remains an astonishing Pomerol. The bouquet has so much vitality and expression after six decades with small red berries, fig, fresh dates and orange blossom that blossom from the glass. It is profound and complex, a bouquet abraded by time to something utterly entrancing. The palate is perfectly balanced with fine tannins and a silky texture. This is a potent wine with vestiges of sweet fruit at its core, kirsch and damson, touches of mint towards the almost port-like finish. It is harmonious from start to finish. Fermented grape juice does not get better than this. Tasted April 2013."

The world's most influential fine-wine producer and the benchmark for Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and the Rhone. Its appellation (AOC) system codifies geography, grape and method, and its wines set the global standard for age-worthiness and terroir expression.
The world's largest fine-wine region, built around blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Divided by the Gironde estuary into the structured Left Bank and the plush, Merlot-led Right Bank, it is the historic benchmark for age-worthy claret and sweet Sauternes.
A tiny, prestigious Right Bank appellation famed for opulent, velvety Merlot-based wines. Iron-rich clay soils yield some of the world's most coveted and concentrated reds.
Produces plush, supple, fruit-forward reds with plum and chocolate notes. Softer and earlier-maturing than Cabernet, it adds flesh and roundness to blends and stars in Right Bank Bordeaux.
