"The most overt wine in the range, 2016 Barbaresco Cole is powerful and bombastic, as it so often is, with a real sense of gravitas and tons of sheer character. Plum, chocolate, spice, new leather and sweet French oak are all kicked up a few notches in this decidedly opulent, massive Barbaresco from Moccagatta. Like many estates in Barbaresco, Moccagatta endured a tough year in 2017. Hail and frost were big challenges, especially in Basarin, CottĂ and Cars (Bric Balin). Unrelenting warm and dry weather led to the latest harvest on record. Moccagatta did not bottle their Barbaresco Basarin at all, opting instead to put the small amount of fruit that was salvaged into the Langhe Nebbiolo. Overall, the lower parts of the slopes did best because of slightly cooler temperatures and greater access to water. In tasting, the 2017s are lighter than normal and come across as not fully developed, which is the result of fruit that was not fully ripe. The 2016 Barbarescos, on the other hand, are every bit as compelling as they were last year."

Italy grows more indigenous grape varieties than any other country and produces wine in all 20 of its regions. From Piedmont's Nebbiolo to Tuscany's Sangiovese, its finest wines pair structure and bright acidity with a strong sense of place.
In Italy's northwest, Piedmont is home to Nebbiolo, the grape behind the powerful, perfumed and long-lived reds of Barolo and Barbaresco. Fog-shrouded hills and calcareous soils define its greatest wines.
Produces Nebbiolo of slightly more elegance and approachability than neighboring Barolo, offering perfume, finesse and firm structure.
Produces pale but powerfully tannic and perfumed reds with tar, rose and cherry notes. The grape behind Barolo and Barbaresco, it is among the most age-worthy in the world.
