"This wine pays homage to the first passionate debate between Dan and Margaret Duckhorn and their first winemaker, Tom Rinaldi, which set out the future of the winery's portfolio. While Duckhorn is known for its varietally focused wines, this cuveé – a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc – is the wine it rests its laurels on. Sourced from six vineyards, including Three Palms, and aged 24 months in new French oak, it is an impressive effort in the challenging 2017 vintage. Lifted aromas of blackberry, cassis, vanilla and candied violet, then the palate reveals real elegance, strutting its stuff with red and black currants, fresh blueberry, bay leaf and fine cigar box spice. Long, fine-grained tannins have a youthful grip but are nicely integrated, and the finish is punctuated by notes of black tea and chocolate."
