"Saturated violet color. A highly complex bouquet evokes ripe red and dark berries, potpourri, exotic spices and olive. Stains the palate with sweet black raspberry and cherry liqueur flavors that take on licorice, allspice and smoky mineral accents on the back half. Rich yet impressively lively in style, showing sharp precision on the wonderfully persistent, youthfully tannic and floral-driven finish. Itâs hard to overstate the importance of the historic Maison Chapoutier in the Northern RhĂŽne valley and, to a great extent, in the south. Annual production for Chapoutierâs combined projects is now pushing 10 million bottles from over 500 hectares of vines owned or under Chapoutierâs management. Thatâs up significantly (to say the least) from the roughly 500,000 bottles produced when Michel Chapoutier took control in 1990. The number of lieux-dits offerings from the prime vineyards in the north, which make up the bulk of my coverage, is quite small. Each of their single-site Hermitages is typically from 3,000 to about 6,000 bottles per vintage. Michel Chapoutierâs daughter, Mathilde, and his son, Maxime, are now on board full-time here and are quickly easing into more prominent roles in the company. Winemaking continues to be overseen by the highly talented and experienced ClĂ©ment BĂ€rtschi, a native of Lyon and trained in Burgundy, at Domaine de la RomanĂ©e-Conti no less, before joining Chapoutier in 2010."

The world's most influential fine-wine producer and the benchmark for Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne and the Rhone. Its appellation (AOC) system codifies geography, grape and method, and its wines set the global standard for age-worthiness and terroir expression.
Spans the Syrah-driven northern crus of Cote-Rotie and Hermitage and the Grenache-based blends of the warmer south, led by Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Its wines are known for power, spice and warmth.
Produces some of the world's most powerful and long-lived Syrah from a single granite hill, yielding dense, structured reds and rich whites.
Syrah (Shiraz) produces dark, powerful reds with black fruit, pepper and smoked-meat notes. It yields elegant, perfumed wines in the northern Rhone and bold, rich styles in Australia.
