"The 2009 Taurasi Riserva Vigna Cinque Querce is absolutely stunning, having just entered a beautiful early drinking window. It's rich and dark-fruited, with crushed stone, balsam herbs and tobacco forming a darkly alluring bouquet. This is velvety yet structured and teeming with vibrant acidity that sets off the black currants, plums and cherry fruit within to create a deceptively juicy expression. Wow, this just goes on and on, enjoyable today yet structured and balanced enough to last many more years in the cellar. It’s only so long before readers catch on to the combination of superior quality and value that the wines of Salvatore Molettieri represent. Prior to 1988, the Molettieri family tended to their vines on the hills of Montemarano, and sold the bulk of their fruit to the top names of Taurasi. That is until Salvatore Molettieri started experimenting in his makeshift cellar, and with time, decided to begin bottling his production for sale …. Through the years, Salvatore Molettieri continued to make improvements in the cellar, as well as acquiring new vineyards, bringing the current holdings to around 13 hectares. He also brought on the winemaking talents of his son Giovanni Molettieri. This house firmly believes that the wines are made in the vineyard first, and so, have been practicing organic since the very beginning. However, they also aren’t afraid to use a percentage of barrique throughout their portfolio of single-vineyard Taurasi. The refinement of these wines is balanced out between a selection of larger oak casks ranging from 30 to 80 hectoliters. Upon release, there’s an early accessibility that the Molettieri family achieves with these wines, one that can trick the taster into thinking that they may not stand the test of time, which unfortunately communicates a diminished sense of importance in some drinkers’ minds; however, they would be wrong in assuming such. The big and powerful Taurasi of Salvatore Molettieri simply needs time to integrate and come into focus, gaining in depth and texture, shrugging off any hints of new wood, and emerging as stunning examples of Aglianico's nobility. The best part is that the wines are remarkably affordable for what they are as well …”
