"The 2012 EL is a blend of 55% Syrah, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, aged for 24 months in French oak (half new). It comes in at 14% alcohol. Between this and the 2011 EL, also reviewed, I would tend to give the nod to thisâgranting that it is less evolved and more of a projection. They are pretty similar, elegant in the mid-palate, showing a lot of finesse and silk for texture, together with some oak impact. The Syrah character does not stand out as much on the EL brand (as opposed to the Altitudes or the Grande Reserves), probably because of the greater oak impact, but you can find it as this gets some air. As this aired out, its finesse stood out and the oak diminished. This is potentially a beauty. It is CĂ´te-RĂ´tie styled all the way. Give it another year or two in the cellar if you can. We'll see where it goes, but I have to lean up on this just now. This is the first look at Ixsir, a winery located in the Batroun mountains area. They have six vineyard sources at altitudes ranging from 400 meters to 1,800 at 'totally different climates,' the winery says. The winemakers are Gabriel Rivero, a Spaniard who was at Château Sociando-Mallet, and Hubert de BoĂźard, co-owner and manager of Château AngĂŠlus. The mid-range Grande Reserve is the flagship, with the EL being an upper-level wine from high altitudes. These are simply lovely. Showing mid-palate finesse and refinement, they have a sophisticated feel to them. If you're into fruit bombs, that is not what you're getting here. These have a lot of potential. Their freshness and balance may sustain them well in the cellar, too. They have a very Northern RhĂ´ne feel to them."

The world's most planted premium red grape, yielding deeply colored, tannic and structured wines with cassis, cedar and graphite notes. Firm tannins and acidity make it exceptionally age-worthy, whether as a varietal or the backbone of a Bordeaux blend.
Produces plush, supple, fruit-forward reds with plum and chocolate notes. Softer and earlier-maturing than Cabernet, it adds flesh and roundness to blends and stars in Right Bank Bordeaux.
Syrah (Shiraz) produces dark, powerful reds with black fruit, pepper and smoked-meat notes. It yields elegant, perfumed wines in the northern Rhone and bold, rich styles in Australia.
