"The 1958 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva from Biondi Santi has a Burgundian nose of tart cherries, chestnut, mint and orange zest, quite vigorous given its age, and fresh but not as powerful as the Barolo from Mascarello. The slightly ferrous palate offers kirsch and candied orange peel on the entry, commendable acidity and a curiously Saint-Émilion–inspired finish that is harmonious and long. It does not match the spellbinding 1955 that I drank over a decade ago, but it was still delicious and could give a few more years of pleasure . . ."

Italy grows more indigenous grape varieties than any other country and produces wine in all 20 of its regions. From Piedmont's Nebbiolo to Tuscany's Sangiovese, its finest wines pair structure and bright acidity with a strong sense of place.
The heartland of Sangiovese, producing Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino and the Cabernet-influenced 'Super Tuscans' of the coast. Its wines balance bright acidity, savory structure and cellar-worthiness.
A powerful, age-worthy Sangiovese from the warm hills of Montalcino, requiring extended aging and prized for depth and longevity.
Tuscany's signature red, giving high-acid, savory wines of sour cherry, herbs and firm tannin. It is the backbone of Chianti, Brunello and many Super Tuscans.
