"Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru from Virgile Lignier has a vivid bouquet with animated blackberry and raspberry preserve aromas, fine mineralité and well integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red cherries and raspberry, sweet tannin, fine acidity and a juicy, quite structured finish with a generous pinch of white pepper spicing things up. This is a resounding success. Tasted September 2016. Virgile Michelot and Domaine Lignier-Michelot are really going places. This is a Morey producer that has been in the ascendant for several years now, but I feel that 2013 is in some way the vintage where Virgile ‘cracked it,’ and will surely set the tone for what is to follow. We tasted through his bottled 2013s in the village of Morey Saint Denis and just like last year, he was kind enough to have lit a crackling fire to ward away the sub-zero temperatures outside. ‘I love the 2013,’ he began. ‘It is a very Burgundy vintage with a respect of terroir and it was not an easy vintage. I did some effeuillage in the spring on the north-facing side of the vines and then a second in September on the south side along with some green harvesting. I started picking late, at the end of September. I was very happy with the vinification in our new temperature-controlled cellar, 2013 being the first vintage to use the new vat. So it was easy to make a long, but not hard extraction, bringing the fermentation temperature up slowly. I start with whole berry and control the fermentation inside the berry, so I just made three or four punch-downs for each cuvée. I prefer to extract with temperature rather than remontage. The fermentation lasted 15 days. The 2013s is the style I want to have – not a big wine, but good, deep structure with a good mid-palate.’ This was a very impressive set of 2013s from Virgile. As I remarked in my previous report, despite the praise directed toward this producer, I had a nagging feeling that there was some way to go, but in 2013 he really delivers, the wines imbued with greater precision, poise and finesse than ever before. Part of that must come down to his new winery on the other side of the RN74, but also part must be down to his maturing as a winemaker. Both his grand crus, the Charmes-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche deliver where it matters, i.e. in the glass, but don’t feel you have to spend an arm or a leg or indeed, any other useful limb to enjoy his wines. The entry-level Bourgogne Rouge 2013 was showing extremely well and do not overlook his beautiful Morey-Saint-Denis Faconnières that ranks alongside his Grand Crus."

2013 in Burgundy was a difficult, cool and hail-hit year with a late harvest and small crop; the wines are fresh, lean and classically styled, with bright acidity and firm structure, especially the reds.
A thin-skinned, terroir-sensitive red producing perfumed, silky and elegant wines of red-berry fruit and earthy complexity. It reaches its apogee in Burgundy.
