"Good full red. Complex nose melds cherry, plum, spices, nuts and smoky oak. Concentrated, suave and sophisticated, with a slightly wild blue and black fruit character complicated by spices. Dense and fine-grained pinot, finishing with silky tannins and noteworthy complexity. Similar in style to the superb 2003 example. I was especially impressed by the trio of 2004 zinfandels here. According to Lee Martinelli, the vineyard team goes to great lengths to counter the zinfandel cluster's tendency toward irregular ripening. In addition to simply reducing the number of clusters, the Martinellis actually remove pink berries and the shoulders of the clusters three or four times during the course of the summer, as well as eliminate sunburned fruit. These latter steps were especially important in 2004, Martinelli explained, because the flowering for zin was uneven and the cluster count was high."
