"The 2021 Hommage Ă Nos Pairs Reserve is understated yet remarkably pretty, showing dark raspberry, crushed rocks and hints of lavender. This is a model of purity, with crisp black fruits and mineral tones swirling under an air of sage and spice. It tapers off staining and potent, much more integrated than the last time I tasted it, with crunchy tannins and an air of licorice that lingers on and on. Stunning. The 2021 is primarily Syrah with an addition of 2% Viognier and 2% Grenache, using 20% whole clusters in the fermentation. I was delighted to follow up with Guillaume Fabre, owner and winemaker of Clos Solène, mainly to taste the final bottled versions of his 2021s. This is a perfect lesson in how bottle-aging helps a wine to find its balance. All of the wines perform above and beyond my expectations. Meanwhile, the 2022s display elegance and the year's warmth through their ripe fruit yet with structure to balance. Fabre was born and raised by a family of vine growers in Southeast France before coming to Paso Robles to work a harvest at LâAventure. He never left. Today, Fabre tends to his estate vineyards in the Willow Creek District, which surrounds his family home and tasting room. Over the past several years, he has been working to replant and reorganize the vineyard while expanding it, all using selection massale from the original vines. As fantastic as these wines are today, I can only imagine what they might become over time. Like the wines of L'Aventure, a Eurocentric feel runs through the portfolio like a common thread."
