While there have been other superb vintages across the board for DRC, none of them surpass 1962 in my view. To be sure, '62 has solid competitors in the form of '71, '78, '90 and '99 but none of these are clearly better. Time will of course be the ultimate arbiter but for sheer aromatic elegance and that classic quality of power without weight, I would rather drink a DRC '62 than any other vintage. The fully mature and brilliantly complex nose features notes of spice, hoisin, clove, anise, game, earth and the initial hints of sous bois that continues onto the rich, elegant, delineated and still vibrantly powerful flavors that deliver stunning length, all the while retaining a fine sense of underlying balance. There is a beguiling sweetness here with nothing out of place as everything is delivered with style and grace. A lovely, lovely wine in every respect and while there is no further development to hope for, neither is there any reason to drink up as this should continue to hold for at least another decade.
